Ayurvedic Management of Lower Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common complaints faced by a large number of people today. Regular back pain usually affect your daily life personally & professionally as well. Inefficient, weak back muscles are prone to injury. Back pain can come on suddenly and last less than six weeks (acute), which may be caused by a fall or heavy lifting. Back pain that lasts more than three months (chronic) is less common than acute pain.

Back pain often develops without a specific cause that  can identify with a test or imaging study. Conditions commonly linked to back pain include:

Muscle or ligament strain

Repeated heavy lifting or a sudden awkward movement may strain back muscles and spinal ligaments. If you're in poor physical condition, constant strain on your back may cause painful muscle spasms. Weak back muscles are prone to injury. Sports injuries and motor vehicle accidents are very common causes.

Bulging or ruptured disks

Disks act as cushions between the bones (vertebrae) of spine. The soft material inside a disk can bulge or rupture and press on a nerve. It can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness and weakness in arms or legs. However, you can have a bulging or ruptured disk without back pain. Disk disease is often found incidentally when you undergo spine X-rays for some other reason.

  1.  Osteoarthritis can affect the lower back. In some cases arthritis in the spine can lead to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, a condition called spinal stenosis.

Spondylosis

Age-related wear and tear affecting the spine in low back. As the disks dehydrate and shrink, bone spurs and other signs of osteoarthritis develop. Dehydrated disks, herniated discs, bone spurs, and stiff ligaments are the result.

Sciatica

A catching pain starts at the low back and radiates through buttocks - behind the thighs, knees, and calves and to the ankles and toes. A bulged disc or an osteophyte of a degenerated vertebrae cause pinching of nerve roots.

Skeletal irregularities

Back pain can occur if your spine curves abnormally. Scoliosis, a condition in which your spine curves to the side, also may lead to back pain, but generally only if the scoliosis is severe.

Ankylosing Spondylosis

May include pain and stiffness in your lower back and hips, especially in the morning and after periods of inactivity. People who have a gene HLA-B27 are at increased risk.
